Exmouth

Up the west coast of Australia, where the desert meets the sea lies Exmouth. Once a low key spot, over the last decade, Exmouth’s fantastic flats fishery has attracted fly fisherman from all over the world. Consistent weather, the sheer number of large fish, and the uniqueness of its fisheries all make it a special place to fish.

Exmouth can be divided into two fisheries: the Ningaloo reef on the oceanside, and the Exmouth Gulf  to the east. The flats of Ningaloo are some of the most beautiful in the world. Crystal clear waters and clean blue skies make spotting fish here easy; even for the novice flats angler. These waters are home to a large population of permit, as well as black spotted tuskfish, blue bastards, GT, and golden trevally. They are also home to Australia’s only significant bonefish population.

Alternatively, the Exmouth Gulf features an extremely unique fishery.  While the water is usually somewhat cloudy, anglers should have no problem spotting fish due to their size. This is the only place in the world where meter plus queenfish can be consistently sight cast to 365 days a year. Watching these speedsters race towards a popper and absolutely crush it should be on every anglers bucket list! Permit and various species of trevally are also found on the flats of the Exmouth Gulf in both size and numbers.

Exmouth is currently one of the hottest billfish-on-fly destinations in the world. The deeper waters off the flats are studded with reef systems that migratory pelagic fish move between seasonally. Black marlin, sailfish, along with tuna, and mackerel can be consistently located with the aid of circling birds.

While designated fishing lodges are limited, Exmouth is home to some of the best fly guides in Australia. Accommodations range from beachfront campgrounds to 5 star resorts.
