Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is located on the east coast just north of Brisbane. It’s a funnel shaped bay, created by tidal movement between the coast and Fraser Island. The bay is 60 kilometers across the mouth, and 60 kilometers deep, and is considered by many to be the birthplace saltwater flats fly fishing in Australia.

To the south of the bay are the Sandy Straits, a complex of mangrove islands fed by the Mary River. The river system pushes nutrients into the flats, attracting large schools of golden trevally during the warmer months. Golden trevally are targeted just like bonefish, however, these brutes can get over 30lbs and will put your tackle to the test.

In the months of November through April, Hervey Bay, attracts vast shoals of baitfish which aggregate in water between 30 and 50 feet deep. Huge numbers of pelagic fish move in to feed, however, it is longtail tuna and juvenile black marlin that are of most interest to the fly angler. Both of these species can be sight cast to on the flats as they travel in and out of the deeper channels. They are fast moving and require long, accurate casts to intercept them. It’s a tough game that will demand your very best skills, but the reward is epic, with good numbers longtail tuna and marlin up to 100lbs being caught every season.

Hervey Bay offers a wide selection of guides, hotels, resorts, and campgrounds for those looking for a more rugged adventure.
