The Kimberley

The Kimberley region is a favorite of many well known Australian fishermen, and is one of the most beautiful and remote regions in the country. Over millions of years, torrential rain and cyclones have shaped breathtaking canyons, gullies, and rivers in the rocky landscapes of the Kimberley. On the coast, deep indents and spectacular rock formations are carved out of solid stone by raging forty foot tides. What makes this region so special is that most of the fishing is done on foot in some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia.

Barramundi fishing in the Kimberley is exceptional; meter long barra can be caught in the rivers and pools that have carved their way through solid rock. The biggest fish are often found in the highly oxygenated waters beneath waterfalls. While presenting your fly to a fish suspended under a waterfall is not easy, casting directly into the falling water and using the current to pull your fly into the strike zone can be very effective. Rock ledges and overhangs tend to form around the edges of pools and provide refuge for barra during warmest parts of the day. Twitching a fly along these structures can often lead to explosive takes. The sheer number of barra that can be  pulled out of a single overhang is remarkable.

The inshore islands and reef system are home to a plethora of GT, queenfish and reef fish. Having dozens of fish put you into your backing can be expected, although landing them is  another story. These waters have one of the highest shark populations in the world, so make sure to bring a heavy rod with a solid drag, and be prepared to switch spots often.

The Kimberley region offers trips and packages with a host of mother ships, independent guides, Heli lodges, and heli fishing operations.
