EXPLORE BAHAMAS

FLY FISHING IN BAHAMAS

If you are into bonefishing and a laid back lifestyle, the Bahamas are the place to be. This collection of easily accessed islands rests just off the tip of the Florida coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It is no secret that the Bahamas offer more productive bonefish flats, and more large bonefish than anywhere else in the world.

The Bahamas is the place to be if you want to cast to double digit bonefish. It’s not all about big bones though; in recent years guides have started regularly putting their clients on large permit, barracuda, and other flats species such as jacks, snapper, sharks, and sometimes tarpon. If you want to test the big bluewater, wahoo, dolphin, sailfish, and marlin are also all possible. The Bahamas is a great option whether you have a week or two to play, or just a few days to escape. Direct daily flights from multiple locations service the Bahamas’ larger islands, and smaller planes deposit anglers on remote cays. Well established lodges, and time-tested guides are found in abundance, catering to beginners and expert anglers alike.

abaco

Variety best describes the fishing on Abaco Island, which rests about 175 miles east of Miami at the northern tip of the Bahamas. When fishing this 130 mile long island you can either choose to go for numbers or quality on any given day. If you’re looking for a laid-back pace and larger numbers of smaller fish, you can’t beat the Marls — this 250-square mile area offers a soft bottom that attracts thousands of bones in the two-to three-pound range.

andros

In bonefishing terms, Andros is its own country – no angler could test all of its waters in a lifetime. Located about 170 miles from Miami, Andros is both the largest Bahamian island, and the least populated. Two large bights (channels) divide the island into three sections — North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros — each area fishing differently depending on time of year. This complex geography makes for some very unique tidal patterns.
