The South Island

The South Island offers some of the best sight casting opportunities for brown trout imaginable. The name of the game here is sight, stalk, and cast. Accuracy and presentation are key, and if the fish sees you, you’re out! The visual aspect of this type of fishing is exhilarating, and catching a pristine South Island brownie on the fly is a deeply rewarding experience.

While the average fish landed is between 4-6 pounds, double digit encounters are relatively common. However, hooking and ultimately landing one of these behemoths will put all of your angling skills to the test. Making accurate casts with long leaders, and ninja like stealth are required for success in the south.

In a region packed with great fly fishing and quality guides; the Nelson-Marlborough region stands out as a South Island gem. This region experiences less rain, more sun, and the most consistent weather on the South Island. In addition, this part of the island is dominated by beach forests, which prolifically produce seeds approximately every seven years. This phenomena fuels plagues of mice, which result in some of the most insane trout fishing you can imagine. The mouse plague is something every angler needs to experience at least once!

In the southern end of the South Island, the Otago and Southland areas offer the most beautiful alpine scenery in the country. This area has a well deserved reputation for its rugged backcountry and gin clear waters. Trout here can grow to be gigantic as they face less pressure than those in the north.

Careful trip planning is important as the weather can be unpredictable and certain rivers can be unfishable after heavy rainfall. Accommodations and fishing options in the South Island include: fishing lodges, heli fishing camps, hotels, and private guides. Keep in mind, the best backcountry fishing areas in the south require either a multiday hike, or a helicopter to access.
